Power interruptions are a fact of life for many businesses across Africa. Every hard shutdown risks corrupted databases, failed disks and hours of downtime. A layered approach keeps the essentials running.
Layer 1 — UPS for clean, instant power
An online (double‑conversion) UPS protects servers, firewalls and core switches from dips, surges and the gap before a generator starts. Size it on real load plus growth, and choose models with network management cards so systems can shut down gracefully if batteries run low.
Layer 2 — longer runtime
For outages lasting hours, combine a generator with an automatic transfer switch, or an inverter with a lithium (LiFePO4) battery bank and solar. Solar‑plus‑battery suits branch offices, comms rooms and remote wireless sites.
Layer 3 — design for it
- Put switches and access points on PoE from a UPS‑backed switch, so Wi‑Fi and phones stay up.
- Keep a second internet link (fibre plus wireless or LTE) with automatic failover.
- Move suitable workloads to the cloud so they are unaffected by local outages.
- Monitor temperature — cooling stops when power fails, and server rooms heat up fast.
Test it
Schedule failover tests: pull the mains, time the batteries, confirm the generator or inverter takes over and that alerts reach the right people.
